134,809 Swiss francs have been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Peruvian Red Cross (PRC) in delivering immediate assistance for up to 20,000 people. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.
Summary: By 26 November 2012, Peruvian health authorities reported 20,106 cases of dengue in the country as of epidemiologic week 45, most of these having occurred in the eastern region of Peru, with Ucayali being the most affected department with 3,010 cases and eleven deaths reported in October and November.
Expecting an increase of the number of cases and with regional health capacity overwhelmed, the Peruvian Red Cross has launched an operation to reach up to 20,000 people with information on the disease and to provide support to the health authorities with treatment.
This operation is expected to be implemented over three months, and will therefore be completed by 4 March, 2013; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by 4 June, 2013).
