Highlights
• It was reported by the Government Agency - AFAD (Disaster & Emergency Management Presidency) that the total number of Syrians registered and accommodated in 14 camps established in 7 provinces as well as those under medical treatment in various hospitals (559 persons) increased to 147,107 persons as of 26 Dec 2012. This is about 13% increase since end of Nov. 2012.
• According to information from AFAD , during the reporting period 1,995 new arrivals were admitted from the borders while 649 Syrians returned to Syria voluntarily. Reportedly since the beginning of the crisis, April 2011, about 207,000 Syrians have been admitted and registered in the camps while some 60,000 of them have returned to Syria voluntarily.
• It was reported by the camp officials of Ceylanpinar that during the reporting period a fire broke out in one of the tents reportedly because of electricity. Unfortunately the fire caused the death of 3 children. According to the information from the camp officials 2 more children were also wounded and are under medical treatment in the hospital of whom one's situation is still critical. Reportedly the Gov. of Officials (AFAD/KIZILAY) prepared an information notice in Arabic and English alerting the refugees to be more careful as well as they will assign one fire extinguisher per district representative. UNHCR will also discuss with the local authorities on additional measures, like training to the representatives by the Fire Department of the provinces.
• It was also reported in the national media that Boynuyogun camp in Altinozu/Hatay province was flooded because of the water released from a dam in Syria. UNHCR Field Team checked with the camp officials who confirmed the flood but reportedly the tents area was not affected.
• UNHCR Field Teams continue to visit the camps, observing the vol-rep interviews as well as providing the technical support and advice to the camp officials on various protection issues, registration and camp management. UNHCR also provided CRIs (Core Relief Items) to the Government of Turkey which is about 28Milyon USD.
