Pakistan: Two more children die

HYDERABAD/ SUKKUR, Jan 10: Two children died of measles in Jacobabad and Hyderabad districts on Thursday.

Five-year-old Qurban Ali Buriro died in Muhammad Yousuf village in Thul taluka of Jacobabad district.

The second death was reported from Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad, where three-year-old Sikandar died from post-measles complications. Sikandar was a resident of Tando Hyder town in Hyderabad Rural taluka of Hyderabad district and had been admitted to hospital on Jan 7.

Dr Rasheed Akhtar Memon, the focal person of LUH Hyderabad, said that one new measles case had been detected at the hospital on Thursday.

He said that so far in January, four children had died of measles while a total of 26 measles cases had been reported in LUH Hyderabad and Jamshoro.

Free medical camps

As the measles deaths continue to be reported from various districts in upper Sindh, the Pakistan Army has established free medical camps in measles-hit areas, said a statements issued on Thursday, PPI adds.

The statement said that the army established free medical camps in worst-hit areas of Mubarakpur, Garhi Yasin, Ghari Hassan and Sultanpur Sangi, as well as the Combined Military Hospitals in Hyderabad and Badin.

It said that around 3,000 children had been vaccinated and more than 4,500 patients treated for measles and other diseases.

The camps continued for more than three days and free vaccines and medical services were provided to local population, it added.
