The overall district is Normal and Information from the climatic outlook predicts that, there are chances of near normal rain in October. This situation leaves the district at Low risk of drought. Although most households have harvested their product, the harvest is noted to be very low. The livestock sector remained normal across the 2 livelihood zones; crop and livelihood sectors require more attention mainly because of low yield of sorghum realized this season of the year and yet it is the main staple food in the region. In addition, there are common cases of malnutrition noted in the district.
Recommendations
Livestock sector Farmers are still advised to continue boiling their milk well, thorough cooking of meat and avoid being in contact with infected blood / contaminated blood in order to avoid completely the few cases of brucellosis in the district; Communities are also advised to continue with the routine management such as vaccination, treatment, de-ticking and spraying of animals; Farmers should not take their animals towards the boarder of Kacheri and Kitgum where there is wild life reserve since the area has much Tes-Tes flies that spread Trypanosomiasis.
Crop sector Farmers should avoid wastage of the little food stock especially sorghum they have harvested; Farmers are still encouraged to preserved food such as cowpeas leaves, okra, cucumbers and hibiscus species “Malakwang” to be used during scarcity; Farmers should preserve and treat their seeds for next year using local organic chemicals like Ash.
Water sector Community should protect their water sources to avoid animals contaminating water from the sources.
Livelihood sector Communities are still encouraged to continue replenishing their stock to avoid shortages during scarcity since low harvest has already been experienced this year as compared to last year. Continuous follow up of the malnourished children by Village Health Team, Health workers and other stockholders to reduce defaulters rate and ultimately curb down death
