Food Security and Malnutrition
A large part of the country is facing food insecurity, malnutrition, lack of safe water, inadequate health services and displacement of civilians. A significant number of humanitarian partners are on the ground, but they need resources to sustain ongoing operations and expand to other areas of need.
Displacement and Conflict More than half a million people have been displaced by fighting between Government forces and militants in the north and south of the country. Many of the displaced have been forced to seek refuge with local host communities, further straining the coping mechanisms of an already vulnerable population. Yemen also hosts a large number of refugees and migrants, mainly from the Horn of Africa, which adds pressure on the country’s limited social and public services.
Dramatic rise in humanitarian needs beyond the conflict areas Humanitarian needs in Yemen have continued to grow despite recent political gains, prompting humanitarian agencies to scale up their response requirements. More than half of Yemen's population do not have access to safe water or adequate foo, and about 1 million children under age 5 are acutely malnourished.
