HOBIGANJ, JANUARY 24 -- Ambassador Dan Mozena visited USAID’s MaMoni project during his tour of Sylhet Division. The integrated safe motherhood, newborn care and family planning project is implemented by Jhpiego Corporation and Save the Children, USA.

During the visit, Ambassador Mozena and his delegation met with community midwives and service beneficiaries. The Ambassador visited a Union Health and Family Welfare Center that has been upgraded by MaMoni Project to ensure 24 hour maternal and neonatal health services. The delegation saw first hand how community volunteers and health workers can collaborate to improve community health awareness and use of maternal and neonatal services, including the use of skilled birth attendants and prompt treatment of child fevers. The delegation also met with the local government Chairmen and learned how local leaders play a key role in supporting community health programs. Since 2009, MaMoni has engaged and mobilized more than 13,000 community volunteers and
5,000 community action groups to promote healthy practices among mothers and children and the use of available health facilities for prevention and treatment services.

The U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over $6 billion in development assistance to Bangladesh since 1971. In 2012 alone, USAID provided more than $200 million to improve the lives of people in Bangladesh. USAID supports programs in Bangladesh that: promote democratic institutions and practices, expand food security and economic opportunity, improve health and education services, and increase resiliency to climate change through adaptation and low carbon development.
