The initiative on Clubfoot treatment by Ponseti method in Myanmar
he first workshop on Ponseti method for clubfoot treatment was held in at Yangon Paediatric Hospital, Myanmar from 28 January – 1 February 2013. The project aims to build capacity of local medical personnel on Ponseti method, raise awareness among the population on clubfoot and its treatment and to establish clinics for treatment and rehabilitation.
CBM in cooperation with Walk For Life is contributing towards capacity development of medical personnel by CBM advisor and training costs for the next three years. Dr. Steve Mannion, CBM Orthopaedic Advisor, is one of the main facilitators for the workshop.
The future of clubfoot treatment in Myanmar
There were total of 60 participants; 10 were nursing staff, 15 were PTs and 45 were medicine/rehabilitation doctors. Five families also participated as case study in the workshop. The agenda of the workshop included general information on clubfoot, techniques of Ponseti manipulation, practice on manipulation on models, actual casting on children, how to do Tenotomy (release of Achilles tendon) and seminar on neglected clubfoot.
After the training, the project aims establish two clubfoot clinics in Yangon and develop local faculties on clubfoot treatment. Awareness raising programme will educate the public to bring children to services.
