In 2012, the ICRC:
visited over 24,700 people detained by Israel or the Palestinian authorities and monitored the medical situation of some 2,000 detainees who were on hunger strike between March and May;
arranged for 110,700 people from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan to visit 5,600 relatives in Israeli places of detention;
arranged for 669 people from Gaza to visit 446 relatives in Israeli places of detention in the context of pilot visits that started in July following a five-year suspension of visits to detainees by families living in Gaza;
improved sanitary conditions for over 390,000 people and assisted over 20,700 impoverished people through cash-for-work projects in Gaza;
provided shelter materials to almost 50,000 people affected by aerial bombardments and house destructions in Gaza and the West Bank;
documented observations made concerning the conduct of hostilities between Gaza and Israel and will be sharing findings with the authorities concerned;
supplied 263 tonnes of medical supplies and 300,000 litres of fuel to key hospitals in Gaza;
renovated the emergency departments of three Gaza hospitals and provided training for more than 150 health staff;
delivered 1.5 tonnes of supplies and over 100 prostheses to the Artificial Limb and Polio Centre in Gaza, which provided services for some 3,000 patients, including 90 amputees;
facilitated access to land in areas affected by restrictions on movement;
assisted people in the West Bank whose houses were destroyed;
supported the emergency medical services of the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the Magen David Adom in Israel;
briefed Israeli armed and security forces, Palestinian law-enforcement officials, media and members of civil society on the work of the ICRC, on international humanitarian law and on human rights.
