A summary of our work in Côte d'Ivoire

ICRC activities in 2012

Health

  • in close cooperation with the Red Cross Society of Côte d’Ivoire, held 41,000 consultations and administered 110,000 doses of vaccine with the help of the mobile clinic covering the area between Bloléquin and Goya;
  • provided assistance to the regional hospital in Guiglo, to the hospitals in Bloléquin and Toulepleu and to four health centres (Doké, Zéaglo, Sahibli and Péhé), enabling them to carry out over 25,000 - consultations, provide in-patient treatment on 400 occasions, deliver 550 babies and administer 22,000 doses of vaccine;

Assistance to displaced persons and returnees

  • provided food for over 7,000 displaced persons or returnees, in 89 villages in the departments of Zouan Hounien, Bangolo, Toulepleu, Bloléquin, Sassandra and Danané;
  • enabled over 30,000 returnees to clear 5,000 hectares of coffee and cocoa plantations as part of a “money for work” programme, in 39 villages in the department of Zouan Hounien;
  • distributed 165 tonnes of seed and farming implements to over 34,000 returnees in 59 villages in the departments of Zouan Toulepleu, Bloléquin, Bangolo, Sassandra and Danané;
  • distributed over 20 million CFA francs to 204 women breadwinners to enable them to do income-generating work in the cities of Duékoué, Bloléquin and Sinfra;
  • built 450 houses for over 3,500 people in Toulepleu, Bloléquin, Sassandra, Bin-Houyé and Zouan-Hounien;

Drinking water

  • installed 11 new hand pumps in Tiobly (Toulepleu) sub-prefecture and in the area along the road between Lakota and Sago, benefiting more than 12,000 people;
  • repaired 30 pumps in 16 villages in Bangolo sub-prefecture, benefiting 14,000 people;

Restoring family links

  • enabled 122 unaccompanied children who had taken refuge in neighbouring countries to find their parents;
  • distributed over 1,000 Red Cross messages in Guiglo, Man and other regions in the country;

Detainee welfare

  • visited over 7,900 detainees during 193 visits to 69 places of detention, both temporary and permanent;
  • monitored 447 people detained in temporary places of detention individually;
  • set up a food surveillance system in short-stay prisons and remand centres. Support in the form of therapeutic nutrition was provided for 427 detainees;
  • treated 199 cases of beriberi recorded in 10 short-stay prisons, both medically and nutritionally;
  • carried out rehabilitation work on the kitchens and the water distribution and sanitation systems in 12 short-stay prisons, benefiting over 4,600 detainees;

Promoting humanitarian principles

  • regularly organized activities for weapon bearers, civil society, the media and other influential players, to promote humanitarian principles;
  • raised awareness of humanitarian principles among over 2,500 members of the armed forces;
  • supported the introduction of international humanitarian law (IHL) into military academies, for the benefit of some 1,360 students;
  • supported the creation of an IHL unit in the general staff of the armed forces by training 20 instructors in the army and the gendarmerie.
