Dear Colleagues,
Following heavy rains and the subsequent flooding in Mozambique in the months of January and February 2013, many communities have been left destitute, with no homes and utensils to use. Sanitation conditions are dire and need urgent attention. Due to lack of clean water to drink and for domestic use, outbreaks of epidemics are threatening the lives of those affected. Already the ministry of health of Mozambique has confirmed 413 cholera cases and two cholera deaths between 28 January and 18 February 2013 in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. Meanwhile in Gaza province there has been a marked increase in cases of severe malaria requiring in-patient services. Physical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and houses were damaged.
Approximately 240,827 people are affected by the floods of which 185,897 have been temporarily displaced.
ACT members, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Ecumenical Committee for Social Development (CEDES) and the Council of Churches in Mozambique (CCM) are responding to this disaster with the goal of reducing suffering and facilitating recovery of flood affected communities through the provision of emergency and post recovery assistance.
Specific project outcomes for this response are:
Targeted households are able to reduce water and sanitation related public health risks (CCM, CEDES, LWF)
The targeted households have increased food availability (CCM, CEDES, LWF)
Communities affected by floods in districts of Chibuto, Xai-Xai, Buzi and Nicoadala are able to assess their risks and vulnerability, and elaborate concrete action plans towards disaster risk reduction. (CCM)
Targeted households have increased access to sufficient cooking utensils to ensure their health, dignity, safety and well-being (CEDES)
Improved shelter and access to non food items for the target population (LWF)
Improved capacity of communities to respond to flooding in the future (LWF)
