Syrian Arab Republic: Syria: Humanitarian Bulletin - April 2013

As the conflict in Syria enters its third year, more than 4 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, including 2.5 million internally displaced people and some 500,000 Palestinian refugees who are increasingly vulnerable. Over 1 million refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries, nearly 75 per cent of them are women and children. Syrian women overcome immense obstacles to provide care and safety to for their families- even as their own vulnerability to unassisted childbirth, sexual violence and exploitation, sexually transmitted infections, malnutrition and poverty increases. Targeted support to women is one of the best ways to ensure the health, security and well-being of displaced and refugee families and communities.
