Islamic Relief is continuing to provide aid to communities suffering in the wake of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit southeast Iran. At least 35 people in the Balochistan area lost their lives and over 180 were injured by the tremor of Tuesday 16 April, which struck along the country’s border with Pakistan.
In the worst effected areas, 85% of families suffered from the quake, with half of these losing their homes. In the immediate aftermath, Islamic Relief provided 375 family-sized tents and 500 kits that provide a family with essential household and kitchen items, such as pots and pans, cutlery, blankets and mattresses.
So far, over 1,200 families in six of the most vulnerable villages have been reached. A female medical officer is also providing assistance, and essential vaccines and medicines are helping prevent the spread of disease.
In addition, as communities start to clear debris and rebuild homes, Islamic Relief is looking to support local people in building earthquake-resistant houses.
Islamic Relief has been working in Pakistan since 1992, and is the only international aid agency to be granted permission by the government to provide emergency assistance in the affected area.
