Following the June 2012 outbreak of violence in Rakhine State, the ICRC set up a permanent presence in Sittwe. Together with the Myanmar Red Cross Society, the organization is providing basic but vital assistance to the sick, wounded and displaced, regardless of their origin. The ICRC and the Myanmar Red Cross are evacuating patients who cannot get to health facilities on their own and giving first aid to the injured. In addition, the two organizations are renovating sanitation and supplying water in camps for displaced persons.
The ICRC's head of delegation in Myanmar, Georges Paclisanu, has just been to Sittwe. He gives an overview of the situation in Rakhine State and the most pressing needs of the people there.
