First team to be on the ground within next 72 hours

Singapore, 21 November 2012 – The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) have made appeals to the international humanitarian community for urgent assistance to support their ongoing relief efforts for the current armed crisis in Gaza, Palestine.

Mercy Relief (MR) has been monitoring the situation since the armed conflict started on Wednesday, 14 November 2012 and has been in direct communications with the WHO, the UNRWA, Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) and the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRC). UNRWA and WHO shared that food and medical supplies are the urgent and priority needs on the ground for the displaced people in Gaza.

As of 19 November, 91 deaths (88 Palestinians and 3 Israelis – including 18 Palestinian children) and 867 injured (740 Palestinians and 127 Israelis – including 252 Palestinian children) were reported. Total Palestinians displaced in Gaza is 1.2 million.

MR’s first team will be leaving this Friday to coordinate the procurement and dispatch of relief supplies. A public fundraising appeal has been officially launched from 21st Nov to 23rd Dec 2012 to support MR’s aid efforts.

In 2009, MR had partnered the UNRWA, the ERC, the PRC and Paris-based Hommes de Parole (Organisation of Rabbis and Imams) to personally procure and coordinate the delivery of more than S$275,000 worth of food and non-food items and medical supplies to Gaza via Egypt and Israel.
