Qatar Charity has provided half a million riyals assistance to Syrian refugee families in Iraq. The aid benefited over 5,500 people, providing them with winter clothes, mattresses, heaters, food and other items. The aid was distributed via three projects:
Compassion Relief Project for Syrian refugees in Iraq: This project aims to provide food, winter clothing, baby milk, mattresses and electric heaters for over 2,000 Syrian families located outside refugee camps in Iraq in the areas of Rawa, Enna, Husaybah and others. The project was established in light of the suffering of these refugees who lack the most basic necessities of life due to the fact that they are living outside the refugee camps. The project was implemented by the Nahrain Foundation for Relief and Development a field partner of QC in Iraq.
The second project is an urgent winter relief project for displaced Syrians in the city of Al-Qa’im:
This project involved the distribution of 900 blankets, 500 heaters and 1,000 bags of clothing, benefitting around 3,000 people and implemented by the Brotherhood and Culture Association, which is also a partner of QC in Iraq.
The third project is an emergency relief project for Syrian refugees in and around the city of Qa’im: This project is being funded by QC and implemented by Shams ul Rafidain Organisation for a period of one month and involves the distribution of food, cooking utensils, mattresses, blankets and health kits to 600 Syrian families living in these areas, helping provide them with the most basic necessities of life, particularly during the severe winter period. “These projects are the embodiment of the desire of Qatar Charity to lend a helping hand to the Syrian refugees in Iraq, whose numbers have swelled to 66,532, according to the latest UN figures issued on December 19 2012. These refugees are suffering doubly due to the events occurring in their country and the harsh winter conditions,” said QC’s Mohammed bin Ali Al Ghamdi.
QC carried out projects worth around 43 million riyals for the benefit of Syrian people in the period April 2011 – November 2012. Sixty five percent of these projects were carried out within Syria, benefitting around 245,000 displaced Syrians.
These on-going projects included relief aid for displaced people inside and outside Syria; in the neighbouring countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq, covering basic needs for food, medicine and shelter. QC distributions of non-food items such as blankets, refrigerators and coolers, fans, toiletries and Eid clothing were also carried out, as well as help with rent at a total cost of around 19 million riyals since the outbreak of the crisis.
